The Danube River threads its way like a ribbon through the northern parts of the country. From it’s source in the Black Forest of southern Germany to the Black Sea, at 1770 miles it is Europe’s longest river and since prehistoric times has served as the main artery for the passage of people and goods throughout this region.
Vienna, for centuries a centre of the Hapsburg Empire, lies in the valley of the Danube. It is a renowned cultural centre particularly in music and literature, and, with its many palaces and public buildings, has some fine examples of baroque architecture and sculpture of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The people are friendly too. They enjoy a peaceful life, excellent food – the delicious cakes and pastries created by Austrian bakers are world famous - and local music. In some of the smaller towns and villages, traditional clothing may still be worn.
As well as the Danube, Austria is fortunate enough to harbour some of Europe’s finest cycling routes. The diversity of the landscapes, the clean air, a far-reaching network of cycling routes that are meticulously signposted, make cycling a pure enjoyment.
