Mozart Trail

Freedom Holiday Self Guided Grading Level 3
8 days/7 nights Price £605pp Tour Code AU008

In the days of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart travelling was exhausting, but nowadays things have changed. The so called “Mozart Bike Path” gives you the possibility to visit the places where this famous composer has spent his lifetime. You visit famous recreation areas such as the Chiemgau and the Salzburg- and Berchtesgardener region.

Starting from his birth town of Salzburg you will visit many places, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart made stops during his journeys. The route leads you across Chiemsee to the Inn valley. From there you cycle through the Northern Tyrol and the "small German corner" back to the Mozart town of Salzburg. The route leads you partly through level, but also through hilly terrains. Between the Inn valley and the town of Salzburg you have to tackle a few gradients, but you can also enjoy the nice descents. Most of the time you ride on bike paths and side streets with not much traffic. A few short sections (max. 1-2 km) have to be cycled on busier streets.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Salzburg.

Located between the two mountains Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg and the River Salzach Salzburg is a picturesque city with small alleys, quaint colourful town homes, rich castles and palaces, neat gardens and a high density of churches and monasteries. Salzburg is a city whose hidden corners and romantic streets unveil new impressions time and time again.

Day 2: Salzburg to Chiemsee, 40 miles (64 km).

Your first stage starts on the Tauern bike path along the river Salzach to Oberndorf (Silent Night Chapel). After crossing the Salzach you pass the Bavarian town of Laufen on the other bank of the Salzach (Worth a detour for a visit). Then you arrive at the warmest lake of Upper Bavaria, the Waginger See. Via Nussdorf you reach your destination of the day, the Chiemsee (lake). Overnight in the surroundings of Chieming or Traunstein.

Day 3: Chiemsee to Wasserburg, 40 miles (64 km).

You cycle from Chieming via Seebruck to the monastery of Seeon, which Mozart visited several times. He also created some of his compositions there. From Seeon you come back to the Chiemsee and go on to Breitbrunn and via Amerang to Wasserburg, where the famous artist liked to stay when he was on his journeys.

Day 4: Wasserburg to Kufstein, 42 miles (67 km).

Before you start your cycling today have a stroll through the enchanting old town, which is completely surrounded by the River Inn. The Inn will accompany you all day, which means that the terrain is flat. Via Rosenheim you will reach Kufstein, the "pearl of Tyrol".

Day 5: Kufstein to Kirchdorf/St. Johann, 28 miles (45 km).

This morning the Inn accompanies you once more for the first kilometers till Ebbs where you ride into the little bit hilly "Kaiserwinkl" of Tyrol. You pass the village Walchsee and cycle via Waidach and Kössen through the imposing mountain landscape of Tyrol to Kirchdorf or St. Johann.

Day 6: Kirchdorf/St. Johann to Bad Reichenhall/Bayerisch Gmain, 30 miles (48 km).

Today you cycle to Waidring and Lofer, two villages where Mozart stopped on his journeys to the South. From Lofer you ride along the river Saalach on a wild romantic trail via Unken and Schneizlreuth to Bad Reichenhall. Mozart made a trip to this well known spa town during the his last stay in Salzburg in 1780. Overnight in Bad Reichenhall or Bayerisch Gmain.

Day 7: Bad Reichenhall/Bayerisch Gmain to Berchtesgaden, 14 miles (23 km).

The stage for this day is very short, to enable you to spend enough time in the world-famous spa town of Berchtesgaden, overtopped by the "Watzmann" (mountain). You can relax in the thermal bath. Those who want to cycle more in this impressing landscape can cycle to the lake Königssee with steep rocks surrounding the lake.

Day 8: Berchtesgaden to Salzburg, 18 miles (28 km).

Soon you will arrive at your final point of the tour Salzburg. You can see Mozart`s birth place, the fortress, Hellbrunn palace, Mirabell palace and so on. You will get your luggage at 6 p.m. at the latest. Individual departure or additional nights. We recommend to book additional nights in Salzburg for trips to the impressing "Salzburger Flachgau" and to St. Gilgen, the Mozart town on the Wolfgangsee (Mozart`s mother was born there, Mozart memorial site, Mozart fountain).

Make your way home or stay another night in Salzburg. Or combine days 7 and 8 and stay in Salzburg instead of Berchtesgaden.
